Prospective Students for Graduate School

While admission to the Community Social Psychology Program is selective and competitive, we always are looking for qualified and strongly motivated students who will benefit from the education we offer. Graduate program faculty make admissions decisions, though candidates must apply through Graduate Admissions.

Students can attend full or part-time.  Those who do not wish to pursue a degree may take courses as non-matriculating students or apply for a graduate certificate program.

Our Students
We typically have between 30 and 40 matriculated students in the graduate program, including those attending part-time. In addition, there are usually another 10 to 20 students taking courses on a non-matriculated basis, some of whom are "checking us out" and may later apply to the program, while others are students from other graduate programs at Lowell.

They vary in age from recent college graduates to students returning to school later in life. Some are professionals expanding their skills; others are looking to change careers. Our students come from different backgrounds, different places and bring different life experiences to the program. We like it that way because students then learn from each other. Many of our students were psychology majors as undergraduates, but we have also had students with degrees in sociology, business, education and other fields.

Approximately two-thirds of our students come from Massachusetts, but we have also attracted students from many other states - from nearby New England states and from as far as Washington and Florida - as well as from countries around the world: Romania, Indonesia, Canada, Ukraine, Israel, Albania, to name a few.

Regardless of background, all students take part in activities to build their community skills, through coursework practicum work, projects, and theses. Here are a few recent examples:

• Producing an award-winning video on alternatives to violence
• Surveying of minority business needs
• Training for local police departments in community mapping
• Collecting oral histories of Portuguese elders
• Mentoring single mothers
• Comparing social services in Cambodia and the United States
