Internet Sites About Lowell

This is a select list of Internet sites about the city where we spend our school or work day and sometimes our nights, as well. These are mostly general sites, with the largest and most relevant listed closer to the top. In addition, most individual agencies, organizations, and groups are likely to have specific sites of their own. And, almost all of these sites have links to others, as well. Not all relevant sites are included here. There is a wealth of information about Lowell online!

www.lowellma.gov
The government site for the City of Lowell; a very big site, including much of what you'd want to know about city government.  Among its many useful sections:

  • "The Division of Planning and Development," at
    www.lowellma.gov/depts/dpd. The site
includes information about community and economic development, the city's zoning code and zoning map, and Lowell's Master Plan.
  • "Online Services," at www.lowellma.gov/services, part of which allows residents to "Compliment, Complain, Correspond, or Request a Service," with other parts linking to GIS information and an online map library.
  • "Community Links," at www.lowellma.gov/community, with about 40 direct links to various community-oriented agencies and organizations.

    www.lowellsun.com
The Lowell Sun - Lowell's daily newspaper

    www.mvhub.com
An on-line directory of Lowell nonprofit organizations and agencies (400+ pages), with very considerable detail as well as contact information for each one. Also has current calendar listings for events in the city, plus links to calendars of other organizations  (e.g., library, youth, seniors, City of Lowell, COOL), as well as a feature allowing users to submit a calendar event.

    www.city-data.com/city/Lowell-Massachusetts.html
A lot of city data, including some interesting demographics and other information you might not have thought about. Well recommended.

    www.mass.gov/cc/lowell.html
A profile of Lowell from the Massachusetts government site. Contains some detailed statistical data on local finances and other topics, plus dozens of Lowell links. (More detailed statistical data from the 2000 federal census, down to the block level, are available from the U.S. Bureau of the Census, at www.census.gov.

    www.lowell.org
A general site about the City, with sections on "Live Here," "Work Here," Play Here," and "Learn Here."

    www.lowellmassachusetts.com

    www.onelowell.net

    www.cultureiscool.org
The Cultural Organization of Lowell (COOL) site
features descriptions of arts projects, arts events, and a calendar. COOL has been very active in organizing and promoting arts activities of its own.

    www.lowellhandmade.com
The Lowell Handmade site is newer than the COOL site, with a very detailed arts calendar, plus postings of the newsletters of many local cultural organizations.  There is a great deal of arts activity in Lowell.

    www.nps.gov/lowe
The early story of America's Industrial Revolution is commemorated at Lowell National Historical Park.

    www.mass.gov
This is the official site of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

    www.organizerscollaborative.org
The Organizers Collaborative site and the official site of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts are the only two sites included in this list that are not based in Lowell. The Organizers Collaborative site is included here because it focuses specifically on applications of low-cost electronic technology to produce social change. Has free downloadable software for organizers, and sponsors annual conferences, several recently held in Lowell.

    Finally: Lowell's Blogs!
Lowell has plenty, and they cover a lot of territory.  One place to start is www.richardhowe.com, a local politics and history site. Richard Howe is Lowell's City Manager and his blog also links to variety of Lowell twitter feeds. Depending on your political persuasion, you could also explore www.leftinlowell.com , or www.right-side-of-lowell.blogspot.com. At some point, you might start blogging or tweeting on your own!
