Bio Sketch

Sharon M. Wasco applies ecological theory to examine how organizational and community context can affect women's responses (e.g., emotional reactions, coping strategies and risk-taking behavior) to indirect or direct experience of sexual and domestic violence. Dr. Wasco's most current research identifies individual, interpersonal and cultural factors associated with repeated sexual victimization among young women. Her applied work includes program development for a school-based teen dating violence prevention initiative in Illinois and program evaluation of community services for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence in Michigan and Illinois. She is the coauthor of a book designed for community and academic audiences interested in improving the community response to violence against women: Evaluating Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Services (Sage, 2002)

Dr. Wasco teaches community psychology and research courses at the undergraduate and graduate level. She joined the faculty of UMass Lowell in 2004.
