The Music Department resides in Durgin Hall, located on UML's South Campus overlooking the Merrimack River. It is minutes from downtown Lowell and convenient to Boston by car, bus or train. Students often travel to the Wang Center, the New England Conservatory, and Symphony Hall for performances or lectures, or just to wander around Fanieul Hall or check out the local scene.

The new state-of-the-art Music Technology Computer Laboratory features 20 student workstations, each of which boasts an Apple G3 minitower with full ethernet access and a Yamaha midi keyboard synthesizer. The computers are equipped with a wide variety of industry-standard software, including music notation programs, graphics programs, office-suite programs, networking applications and programming applications. Among its many capabilities, the lab enables students to compose music and then hear it played back with near-accurate instrumental sound through either the Macintosh's built-in synthesizer or the midi keyboards.

There are also 30 rehearsal suites, a 225 seat recital hall, 1,000 seat concert hall and sound recording technology studio space, as well as traditional classroom space. Rehearsal suites are available for students to practice at any time of the day or night. Roommates particularly like this feature so they can sleep or study!The recital and concert halls accommodate student performances, as well as professional presentations as part of the Community Arts Outreach Program or the Department's Guest Performer Series.
