1. Do students who currently take 92.11 (Math Perspectives) need to take both 92.111 and 92.151?
NO... Most students will take only one of them, depending on the circumstances.
2. Who should take the new 92.111 (Quantitative Reasoning)?
Some humanities/social science students may be required to take this course as a result of placement test scores.
For Spring, 2001 the only students who must take 92.111 are those who were placed in sections 221-232 of 92.111 in Fall, 2000 but did not pass. Other students who are weak in mathematics, particularly those having difficulty in 92.183 or 92.283, may elect to take this course.
3. Does 92.111 fulfill the new mathematics General Education requirement?
It is intended that 92.111 fulfill the GenEd requirement, for students in departments with no other mathematics requirement. For Spring, 2001 this will be the case. The mathematics department is working with the administration to see that 92.111 is NOT reclassified as a "remedial" course for Fall, 2001; however, this is still being studied.
4. Can 92.111 be used as a free elective for all students?
Science and engineering students can not get credit for 92.111. The College of Management has ruled that 92.111 can not be counted toward graduation requirements. Other colleges may exercise their discretion.
5. Who should take 92.151 Explorations in Mathematics?
Students who pass the Acuplacer test, but whose program requires no other mathematics courses. This course will fulfill the General Education requirement?
6. What other mathematics courses fulfill the mathematics General Education requirement?
Any course offered by the mathematics department above the level of 92.110. (Most students whose program requires a mathematics course (including 92.183 or 92.283) automatically satisfy the mathematics General Education requirement.without taking any additional courses.
7. What transfer courses satisfy the mathematics General Education requirement?
In general courses in College Algebra do NOT satisfy the mathematics General Education requirement? Students who wish to use other mathematics courses must provide evidence that courses taken elsewhere are NOT remedial and cover material ABOVE this level.
8. Can students take (and receive credit for) 92.151 more than once?
YES, humanities/social science students may request permission to take 92.151 again for credit as a free elective if the topics covered in the sections selected are sufficiently different. However, students must then register under a suitable number, such as 92.216.
9. How does the revised 92.127 differ from precalculus and the previous Calculus IA?
92.127 Preparation for Calculus reviews the material from algebra, trigonometry and such precalculus topics as graphing functions. In addition, it is designed to help students develop both problem-solving and study skills. It does NOT provide an introduction to calculus, but a thorough preparation. Thus, it goes beyond precalculus, but does not include the introductory calculus material previously on Calculus IA.
Most students are placed in this course based on the results of a calculus readiness test. In addition, students who are having difficulty in calculus I may elect to take this course. The mathematics department has arranged an extended deadline for students to transfer from 92.131 to 92.127.
11. Do credits earned in 92.127 count towards graduation?
NO. This is consistent with the previous policy in which students could NOT get credit for both 92.127 and 92.131; could not count 92.115 or 92.124 toward a science and engineering degree and could only count 4 of the 8 credits for 92.127/92.128. BUT students who transfer to other colleges may be able to count 92.127 as a free elective.
