Andre Dubus III was the 2001 Jack Kerouac Writer-in-Residence at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. He began his college career at Bradford University in Massachusetts. He then studied sociology at both the University of Texas and University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Andre Dubus III is the author of a collection of short fiction: "The Cage Keeper and Other Stories", and four novels: "Bluesman", "House of Sand and Fog", and "The Garden of Last Days".
"The Garden of Last Days", a New York Times bestseller, was released in hardcover in June 2008, and in paperback in June of 2009.
Dubus III is perhaps best known for his best selling novel, "House of Sand and Fog". The novel topped the New York Times Best Sellers List, and was an Oprah Book Club Selection. "House of Sand and Fog" was also a fiction finalist for the National Book Award, the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, and the Booksense Book of the Year. It has been has been published in eighteen languages. Dubus III also co-wrote the screenplay for "House of Sand and Fog" which in 2003 was made into a film starring Ben Kingsley and Jennifer Connelly and nominated for three Academy Awards.
His work has been included in The Best American Essays of 1994, The Best Spiritual Writing of 1999, and The Best of Hope Magazine. Dubus III has been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, The National Magazine Award for fiction, The Pushcart Prize, and was a Finalist for the Rome Prize Fellowship from the Academy of Arts and Letters.
A member of PEN American Center, Andre Dubus III, has served as a panelist for The National Book Foundation, The National Endowment for the Arts, and has taught writing at Harvard University, Tufts University, Emerson College, and the University of Massachusetts Lowell where is a full-time faculty member. He is married to performer Fontaine Dollas Dubus. They live in Massachusetts with their three children.
