Welcome to the UMass Lowell English Department! We have two department offices on campus: O’Leary Library Room 412 (South Campus) and Falmouth Room 301 (North Campus). Katherine Conlon is the department’s staff assistant located in O’Leary. For your administrative needs, she can be reached by e-mail at Katherine_Conlon@uml.edu or by phone at 978-934-4182. Paula Haines is the Coordinator of English Language Services located in Falmouth. She is also the co-director of the Common Text Program and is available to discuss curriculum planning. She can be reached by e-mail at Paula_Haines@uml.edu or by phone at 978-934-4186.
Marlowe Miller is the Interim Chairperson of the English Department. Her many responsibilities include preparing and maintaining budgets, arranging and leading department and committee meetings, writing reports, coordinating search processes, hiring and managing faculty appointments, developing the semester schedule of classes for both day and continuing studies, and overseeing student advising. She is a great resource for answering just about any question you might have about the University. For routine questions about schedules, room assignments, etc., please ask Katherine Conlon first.
You will be provided with an office space and a mailbox either on North or South Campus, depending on the campus on which you are teaching. It is likely that you will be sharing an office space with another faculty member. There may/may not be a computer available for your use. There is a computer available to all department faculty in the main office area on each campus. The staff assistant will provide you with a key for your office, which must be returned at the end of each semester.
Click here for information on getting to and around the campus.

The College of Arts and Sciences is located on South Campus in Durgin Hall Room 104. It houses the Dean and administrative assistants. Contracts are issued from the English Department Office shortly before the beginning of each semester. Your contract indicates the courses to be taught and your salary for the semester. If you have questions regarding your contract after it has been signed, you should contact Ms. Robyn Lessard, Assistant to the Dean by e-mail: robyn_lessard@uml.edu or by phone at 978-934-3842.
Paychecks are issued bi-weekly on Fridays. Before a first paycheck is issued, you must go to HR/Payroll located on South Campus in Dugan Hall Room 200 to fill out several forms, including direct-deposit paperwork and an I-9 tax form. Regardless of whether or not you choose direct deposit, your pay stub will be delivered to your department mailbox on payday. Your official University ID number can be found on your pay stub.
After you meet with the English Department Chairperson, he/she will give you a signed New Faculty/Staff Request for Services Form that you should bring to the Access Services Office. With this form completed, the staff will be able to provide you with a UMS number, parking sticker, e-mail address, and University ID card. The form includes instructions on how to obtain these items.
The Access Services Office is located on South Campus next to the South Campus Dining Hall. Its hours are Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Fridays 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The office can be reached at: 978-934-2113 or 978-934-4211, Fax: 978-934-4004, or e-mail: access_services@uml.edu.
The University ID card provides you with the ability to park in designated faculty parking lots and offers library privileges.
Once you have followed the procedures to obtain a University ID card, you will also create an email account. You will be able to access e-mail through Outlook Web Access. Important University information is sent via e-mail, so it is important that you establish this account as soon as possible. You may forward your UMass Lowell e-mail to a personal e-mail account. If you have questions, please refer to the Information Technology website.
The English Department also offers two e-mail listservs that may be of interest to faculty--Writing and the General Faculty listserv. For more information about the Writing listserv, contact Paula Haines and for the General Faculty listserv, contact Katherine Conlon.
The staff assistant is available to assist you with your administrative needs such as delivering photocopying jobs to and picking them up from the duplicating office, mail delivery, taking phone messages, filling out forms, and helping you navigate the policies and procedures of the University.
Office supplies
Instructors should contact Katherine Conlon when making requests for office supplies. If it is for special materials, she will consult the chair.
Copies
A photocopier is available in O’Leary Room 412 and in Falmouth Hall in the Economics Department for your use. At the time of hire, you will be provided with a five-digit department code. For any copy jobs greater than 50 pages, please fill out a duplicating form and leave it in the department office. We will have your copies made at the Central Duplicating Office either on North or South Campus. Please provide at least 24 hours advance notice during the semester and three days lead time during busy semester periods.
There are restrictions on all copyrighted material; the policies and procedures for making copies can be found on the Distribution Services website.
Choosing a Textbook
If you need help choosing a textbook for your class, you may contact Paula Haines to discuss this matter, along with any other questions you have with regard to curriculum planning. If you already know which textbook you will use, you should contact the UMass Lowell Bookstore either by phone, e-mail, or through the online book-ordering system. The bookstore announces deadlines for ordering books prior to the semester in which you are teaching. If a faculty member orders their books too close to the start of the semester, the bookstore may not be able to guarantee that the books will be available in time for class.
Classroom Assignments
Your classroom will be assigned to you by the Registrar’s Office very close to the start of class. Please check your ISIS account and the Registrar’s Office web page frequently for more information.
Syllabus
A copy of your syllabus is due at the end of the 2nd week of classes. Students must also have copies at this time.
Office hours
Every faculty member is required to offer office hours for two hours each week. They must be held either before or after class. You should post your office hours on your syllabus and arrange to meet your students in your assigned department office or classroom.
Information Literacy Sessions
When teaching introductory composition courses such as College Writing I or College Writing II, it is required that you bring your students to an information literacy session at the library. Prior to the beginning of each semester, be on the look out for an email or phone call from a librarian from either Lydon (North Campus) or O’Leary Library (South Campus) to schedule your session. If you contact your librarian, you can customize your class visit to coincide with your teaching plan. If not, dates and times will be chosen for you. Currently, the contacts are Margaret Manion (Margaret_Manion@uml.edu) for North Campus and Rosanna Kowalski (Rosanna_Kowalski@uml.edu) for South Campus. Please refer to the Library Instruction Program for more information.
Cancellation of Classes
As a faculty member, you are expected to attend every class. However, if you are unable to attend the class due to unforeseen circumstances, you should call the English Department Office and leave a message. The staff assistant will post notification on the classroom door. You may also send an email out to the students through your ISIS account.
In the event of inclement weather, please check school closing information on the UMass Lowell website as well as on all local television and radio stations.
Student Evaluations
During the last week of classes, instructors are asked to have their students complete an anonymous written evaluation of the class and the instructor. Faculty should have a student drop these completed evaluations to the Department Office in a sealed envelope to be provided. They are available for review three years after the course is taught and if the instructor is still teaching at that time.
Class Rosters and Grading
At the time of hire, the Access Services form you received provides you with an email logon as well as an ISIS (Intercampus Student Information System) account logon. Go to ISIS to login for the first time.
As a faculty member, you will need to use ISIS to view/print class rosters, provide students with permission numbers, and enter grades. The availability of the web-based self-service gives faculty access to information from both on and off campus. Refer to the IT Training Information website for instructions on performing available functions.
Permission numbers are given to students by the instructor teaching the course on a case-by-case basis when a course is full.
Final exams must be given in the scheduled exam period, which is published on the Registrar’s Office website during the last few weeks of class. Grades are generally due within 48 hours after the final.
This program, inaugurated by the English Department in fall 2005, introduces UMass Lowell’s freshman to a shared reading experience in each semester of College Writing. In first-semester College Writing classes, students read a nonfiction text in common and attend programs designed to emphasize the interdisciplinary nature of the writing classroom. In College Writing II, students read a dramatic text in common and attend both a production of a play at the Merrimack Repertory Theatre in downtown Lowell and related events taking place on campus. Through their common experience of analyzing the common text and attending the programs sponsored by various departments and disciplines, students will continue to develop a sense of the exciting, intellectual and cultural scope of their experience at UMass Lowell; enhance their sense of belonging to a vibrant learning community across the disciplines; and tie the general-educational goals of critical thinking and communication skills to students’ understanding of their roles as members of the broader community.
Technology and Teaching Resources
All members of the University community are expected to comply with the acceptable use policy.
We have six smart classrooms available for English classes in Dugan Hall on South Campus. The six have been equipped with podiums, called “Smart Sympodiums,” that have DVD/VCR, PC, document camera and laptop/PowerPoint/thumb drive capability. The instructor works from the podium’s computer screen which is operated by a mouse in four of the rooms and by touch-screen method in the other two.
For more information about teaching resources, you may contact the Faculty Development Center, Media Services, the Library, or the Department Chair.
Library resources can also be utilized online and off-campus. The resources available include books, journals, electronic library, remote access to library databases, Boston Library Consortium Membership, library instruction and consultation, collection development, virtual catalog, and interlibrary loan.
The Information Technology Help Desk provides online and telephone support to the University community for issues relating to hardware, software, telephones, Internet access and email. Contact the Help Desk for technical support, to obtain software or to report a technical issue.
TurnItIn.com
The University offers faculty use of the tools on Turnitin.com. This website provides the opportunity to have your students upload all of their work online. Once online, you can grade their work in a paperless environment, have students review the work of their peers, manage grades and assignments online, and identify unoriginal material, thereby preventing plagiarism.
To obtain the username and password, contact the Reference Desk on either of the campuses' two libraries.
Students should see their academic advisor with questions on course selection. If they do not know who their advisor is, please refer them to the academic department office for their major.
Support services for students are provided by the Centers for Learning and Academic Support Services (CLASS) and the Office for Students with Disabilities.
For assistance with students experiencing behavioral issues in your class, you may contact the Counseling Center and the Dean of Students Office.
The Write Place
Professor Susan Kirtley is the director of the university’s tutoring center for student writing. The Write Place offers tutoring to undergraduate and graduate students in all phases of the writing process. Students may make an appointment for one-on-one assistance from trained writing tutors. The professional team at the Write Place works closely with the English Department to offer assistance to all University students to improve and support writing across the curriculum. You may contact Susan at Susan_Kirtley@uml.edu for more information.
Equal Opportunity and Outreach
Academic Policies (i.e. attendance, withdrawal from courses, plagiarism/academic integrity policy, grading disputes)
