I am taking a computer class, can I have a Computer Science account?

If you are a computer science major or the course number for the class begins with "91", yes you can have a computer science account.

If you are taking a UNIX course through continuing education, you probably want an account on ce.uml.edu. Fill out the online form.

Is there a limit on how much disk space I can use on the linux and unix machines? (i.e., What are the disk quotas?)

The CS department has enabled disk quotas for student linux and unix accounts. This means that each CS user has a limited amount of space that they can utilize. By default, a user account for a CS major will have a 80MB quota. Accounts for non CS majors have a 40MB quota.

When you exceed your disk quota, you are given 6 days to bring your disk space down to a level below the quota limit. If you do not bring your disk usage under the quota after the 6 day period (known as the grace period), you will no longer be able to create or modify files.

The linux/unix 'quota' command will allow you to see what your assigned quota is, and how much disk space you are currently using.

To use this command, simply type 'quota' at the linux/unix command prompt. The output of quota will look something like this :

---- Disk quotas for user nomar (uid 5005):
Filesystem   blocks  quota  limit  grace  files  quota   limit   grace
/usr/cs/cubs  33008  80000  81000  6days  647     0        0      ----

The 'block' value is number of 1K blocks you are currently using (in this case, about 33MB).

If the 'blocks' value has an asterik (*) next to it, this means you have exceeded you 'hard' quota (see below). In this case, you will NOT see a value under 'grace'.

The 'quota' value is the soft quota. Once you exceed the 'quota' value, you have up to 6 days (grace period) until the system will not allow you to create or modify files until you bring your usage under the 'quota'. This value is in 1K blocks.

The 'limit' value is your 'hard' quota. Once you exceed that, you DO NOT get a grace period and you will not be able to create or modify files. This value is in 1K blocks.

The 'grace' value is the number of days until you cannot create or modify files if the 'blocks' value stays above the 'soft' quota.

The 'files' value is the total number of files under your homedirectory. The number of files you have under your directory is not restricted by the quota.

If you have exceeded your quota, files you create via cp, gcc, etc will have 0 bytes. You MAY or MAY NOT receive a notice that file creation has failed due to a quota limit.

My ID card won't let me into the lab, can you help?

If your ID card won't let you into the parking lots or dorms or CS labs, your card is probably broken.  You need to see the Student Services department in Southwick Hall.

If you can get into your dorm, then your card did not get authorized to admit you to the CS labs. Send email to admin@cs.uml.edu with your name and which door you are trying to get into.

If you don't live in the dorms and don't park on campus or aren't sure if your card is authorized, send email to admin@cs.uml.edu.

How many passwords do I have?

There are two main computer science systems, Linux (Mercury and the LINUX workstations) and MS Windows.  Each has separate passwords.  If you change your password on one system, it is not changed on the others.

How do I change my password?

Use the Linux passwd command (not password). To change your Windows password, log into a Windows system, use the ctrl-alt-del sequence, and choose 'change password' when the menu pops up.

I forgot my password, what do I do?

Visit the administrators in OS312. They can't tell you what your linux password is but they can reset it for you. If you forgot your windows password, you'll need to visit the IT Help Desk on the 1st floor of Olsen Hall. Bring you picture ID so you can be properly identified.

Will you email me my password or tell it to me over the phone?

No, we won't email you your password.

If you are really well known to us and we are absolutely sure we recognize your voice, we might give you a password over the phone.
