Printer FriendlyIn order to make available the limited amount of resources available to the most students, several policies have been adopted and adhered to. Most policies are addressed in the University of Massachusetts at Lowell Computer and Network Usage Policy. This document adds additional policies regarding the use of Computer Science equipment and resources.
Violation of these policies could result in loss of privileges and/or accounts.
Workstations
There are 3 computer labs designated for use by Computer Science students.
Olsen 308 : Linux Workstation Lab
Olsen 310 : Microsoft Windows Lab
Olsen 314 : Microsoft Windows Lab
The systems in these labs are to be used ONLY by students currently enrolled in a computer science (i.e. 91.xxx) class. Students who give out their username and/or password to any student to use these systems will lose their account privileges.
Users may not lock any workstation for a period of longer than 15 minutes. Workstations found to be locked more than 15 minutes will be unlocked by system support personnel, resulting in user logoff and possible data corruption/loss.
It is the responsibility of each user to log off of the system/workstation when they are finished with using it. Failure to do so will allow others to gain unauthorized access to that user's account.
Users may not change the setup of any workstation to make it appear broken.
You may not move any piece of equipment for any reason without permission from a Systems Operator or Manager. Should a piece of equipment need to be repaired, please contact the CS support team at admin@cs.uml.edu or visit a computer operator in Olsen 312.
Unauthorized Access
1. It is the responsibility of the user to ensure that their account password and files are kept private. Users who give out their system password(s) to other individuals will have their account privileges revoked.
2. Password cracking and/or guessing is not allowed. Students found to be cracking passwords will be subject to account locking and/or deletion.
3. Students may not use their CS accounts to attempt to gain unauthorized access to other UML or non-UML systems. Those accounts involved in this activity will have their accounts locked and/or deleted. This also includes but is not exclusive to actions such as 'spamming', 'hacking', and 'denial of service'.
4. The CS department will reserve the right to lock and/or delete any accounts which contain files/scripts/programs that are known to be used for activities including but not exclusive to cracking, spamming and denial of service. This includes but is not exclusive to home directories, 'temp' system areas, web pages and email folders.
5. Students who discover or feel that their account has been comprised by another user should immediately report this to the UML CS system operations team by sending email to admin@cs.uml.edu.
Harassment
CS users may not use the computer science resources to harass others. This includes but is not exclusive to activities such as spamming, spoofing, and tampering with system resources to appear as a different user.
Eating, Drinking, Smoking, etc.
There is absolutely no eating, drinking, or smoking in ANY computer lab. Food and/or drink may not be brought into the labs, including unopened bottles/cans/packages. Failure to comply with this policy will result in the loss of lab and user account priviliges.
You must insure that you keep your work area clean. Please clean up after yourself.
Game Playing
Game playing is NOT PERMITTED in any of the labs AT ANY TIME unless specific authorization has been granted.
This ban includes the use of CS systems to access other systems elsewhere for the purpose of playing games:
IRC may NOT be used at any time. Other "multi-user" chat systems are ALSO excluded. IRC robots ("bots") are not allowed AT ANY TIME.
Pseudo-Network Programs
Programs which can be run from shell accounts that give "pseudo-network connectivity", are not allowed from CS systems without special authorization. These "protocols" when run over the University network are VERY inefficient and flood the network with extra traffic. If you are seeking network connectivity from home, please check out some of the regional or national providers, or inquire about limited SLIP/PPP service from the Telecommunications Department.
Printer Usage
A laser printer is available for text and postscript file printing in each of the computer labs.
If there is a paper jam or any other problem with the printer, please do not try to fix it yourself. You can ask for assistance from a systems operator in Olsen 312 or send email to admin@cs.uml.edu.
Should a printer run out of paper, please request assistance by seeing a system operator in Olsen 312 or send email to admin@cs.uml.edu. Do NOT place used paper back into the printer - this will cause printer damage.
