Chemistry is important not only for understanding the natural processes studied by scientists and other professionals in the life, earth, and material sciences, but it plays a crucial role in our industrial development. The Department of Chemistry at the University of Massachusetts Lowell is proud of its place in the rich history of Lowell, the first industrial city in the United States. More than 100 years ago, chemists, engineers, and educators were trained to support the textile industry once so important to this city.
