Graduate Program

The Merrimack Valley, birthplace of the American industrial revolution and home to two centuries of immigrants, offers a fascinating laboratory and backdrop for studying how regions develop and evolve.  Learn how to use technical tools such as geographic information systems and statistical analysis, while simultaneously conducting field research in actual communities and industries.  Investigate the relations between local development and the national and international economies.  Examine the social and environmental dimensions of development.  Compare regional strategies for development from around the globe.

You will learn how to look at a region as a whole, discover innovative solutions, and intervene in communities for positive change.  You will probe the historical roots of  development and explore the theories that illuminate it.  You will experience first-hand the economic and social development of regions.

Students in the RESD program can go on to:

  • City and town planning or management
  • Positions in state or federal government agencies
  • Work in nonprofit organizations
  • International development activities
  • Research, analysis, and consulting jobs in the private sector or academic settings

Our faculty has extensive national and international networks to assist in career placement.  The Master’s program also prepares students to continue their education in a doctoral program in social science, public policy, or related fields, including the University’s Work Environment Program.

Program Requirements

The graduate certificates require four courses. The master of arts
requires 30 to 33 credits, which usually involves ten courses. A full-time
MA student typically takes two years to complete the program. We welcome
part-time students, as well. All core courses, and some electives, are
