Department Philosophy

The Department of Work Environment seeks to integrate scientific, social, economic and political approaches by recognizing the complexity of work environment problems and the need for prevention. Thus, the programs integrate methodologies traditionally found in such diverse academic units as departments of mechanical or industrial engineering, economics, public administration, statistics, and schools of medicine and public health.

Academic Programs in the Department of Work Environment

The Department of Work Environment (DWE) offers degree programs at both the Master's and Doctoral levels. The programs are designed to prepare practitioners and research scientists with advanced knowledge in:

1. Identification and measurement of exposures to chemical, physical, safety, psychosocial, and musculoskeletal hazards in work environments;
2. Design and evaluation of control strategies and preventive measures for these types of exposures, including the development of more sustainable systems of production;
3. Investigation of risk factors for work-related disease and the effectiveness of control or prevention strategies; and
4. Development and analysis of strategies for the reduction of disease in the work environment based on public and private policy alternatives.
