Mechanical Engineering Student Advisory Council

The Mechanical Engineering Student Advisory Council (MESAC) is a group of undergraduate and graduate students that meet regularly with the chairman of the department to provide feedback on issues of concern to students. If you are interested in becoming a member please contact Prof. McKelliget.

MESAC met for the first time in April 2004. Prior to that, students met once a year with members of the ME Advisory Board (MEAB) in closed session.

Objectives:

• To improve the student experience within the ME department
• To improve the ME programs
• To provide feedback between ME students and ME faculty

Membership:

Student representation from each undergraduate year.  Student representation from Masters and Doctoral programs.

Experience over the last few years has shown that it is a problem selecting a meeting time that all members can make.  It is proposed, therefore, to expand the membership to an unspecified number.

In the past it has been very difficult to recruit Freshmen to the council.

Meetings:

The Chair of the department will meet with council members at least once a semester.  Two members of the council will attend ME (Industrial) Advisory Board meeting once a semester.

Responsibilities:

The student members of the council have the responsibility to represent the views of the students in the ME department on any and all issues of concern to the students.  These issues include curriculum, facilities, individual courses and instructors, pet peeves, life in general etc.

The Chair of the department has the responsibility to listen to the views of the students and to provide them with feedback in a timely manner.

Meeting Minutes:

The Chair of the department will summarize each meeting in written form.  These minutes will be filed as part of the ABET material.  The minutes will not include any names.  If it is necessary for the Chair to talk to an individual faculty member as a result of a meeting he will not divulge any student identities to that faculty member.
