Study Abroad Procedures

1. Start by talking to the study abroad advisor in the Centers for Learning and Academic Support Services.

UML South: Centers for Learning, O’Leary Library 300D

Kristen Rhyner  (978) 934-2920

All students interested in studying abroad must fill out an initial inquiry form and start researching their study abroad options. There are brochures and catalogues available for review on South Campus (O'Leary 300D). In addition, the STUDY ABROAD INFORMATION section of this web site has a variety of electronic resources on potential study abroad program options.

In collaboration with the study abroad advisor, students will narrow their interests to a proposed program/country of study.  The study abroad advisor will review the student's current UMASS Lowell academic program and standing and will discuss the student's various study abroad interests and options.

2. Students should also see their academic advisors in their major department to discuss how a study abroad program will fit into their course of study.

3. Once the student determines the study abroad program(s) that best fit their academic plan and interests, the student should submit the application to the study abroad sponsoring school or program.

Most programs require students to submit the following: application, UMASS Lowell official transcript, passport photos, passport number/copy and faculty/advisor recommendations.  Some programs have additional application materials that must be submitted.  Please read application requirements thoroughly and plan ahead.

4. Students who receive financial aid or may need financial aid for the proposed program of study should contact the UML Financial Aid Office for information about loans, scholarships and grants:

·          Lisa Levesque (978) 934-4229                                                 Financial Aid Office, Dugan Hall 102 (South Campus)

The UMASS Lowell Financial Aid office has a packet of information and forms that must be filled out in order to be eligible to receive financial aid during a semester abroad.

5. Students must notify the study abroad advisor of acceptance into a program and make an appointment with her to ensure the proper documentation is filed at UMass Lowell prior to departure.  All of this paperwork must be filed no later than 30 days prior to departure.

In addition to the administrative requirements that must be completed at UMASS Lowell, there are many details you must complete with the program school/program you are working with for your study abroad experience.

These are some other things you will need to work on before your departure.  There may be additional suggestions/requirements that the program provider may have for you as well.
