Protecting Massachusetts' Children from Environmental Risks: Problems & Solutions

Purpose:
To provide nurses and other health professionals serving children, particularly those who are minority or low-income children, with the knowledge and skills to better identify, manage, and prevent environmental health risks as well as provide a forum for networking to address the challenges of pediatric environmental illness.

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
o Identify pathways and routes of exposure to environmental health hazards.
o Describe the relationship between individuals or populations and the community environment, including work environment.
o Identify the populations made vulnerable by personal characteristics to environmental health hazards.
o Understand the mechanisms and pathways of exposure to environmental health hazards.
o Describe prevention and control strategies for environmental hazards.
o Complete an environmental health history assessment, recognize potential environmental health hazards and sentinel illnesses, and make appropriate referrals for conditions with probable environmental etiology.
o Access and provide environmental health related information to individuals and communities, and to locate appropriate referral sources.
o Describe the role of advocacy, ethics, and risk communication in individual care and community intervention with respect to potential adverse effects of the environment on health.
o Understand the policy framework and major pieces of legislation and regulations related to environmental health.
