Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry
The mission of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), as an agency of the  Human Services is to serve the public by using the best science, taking responsive public health actions, and providing trusted health information to prevent harmful exposures and disease related to toxic substances. The site contains useful information about hazardous substances, waste sites, human health effects, and emergency response.

ATSDR Public Health & the Environment
ATSDR’s quarterly newsletter is a source of reliable information about health and environment.

ATDST Case Studies
The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) provides Case Studies in Environmental Medicine.  These self-instructional publications are presented to increase the health care provider’s care knowledge of hazardous substances in the environment, as well as assistance in evaluating potentially exposed patients.  The ATSDR offers continuing medical education units and continuing nursing education units.

American Association of Occupational Health Nurses
The website for the American Association of Occupational Health Nurses provides information about practice resources, research, environmental health, and scholarship opportunities.  Continuing education modules are posted on line, as well as links to other environmental health websites.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website which includes: public health information and guidelines, recent reports and publications, fact sheets, and official guidelines and recommendations published by the CDC.  Provides links to other websites.

Environmental Protection Agency
This government site provides information about environmental health topics such as pesticides, air quality, water quality, and ecosystems and their  impact on human health.  Information about government regulations and programs addressing environmental health issues is presented.

John Snow Institute
John Snow Inc. Research and Training Institute emphasizes public health services, environmental health, substance abuse, HIV/AIDS, services to children, adolescents and women's health. Site includes job postings, publications and links to Medline abstracts.

Morbidity & Mortality Weekly Report
The Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report site provides surveillance summaries, disease trends, public health resources, publications, and continuing education.

National Academies
The National Academies site includes the National Research Council, National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, and the Institute of Medicine.  Current projects, news archives, publications and employment are highlighted.

National Center for Environmental Health
This National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH) site contains chemical, radiological, and biological exposure information and links to emergency preparedness.  Additional topics include air pollution, asthma, and prevention of lead poisoning in young children.

National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences
The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) site lists employment and training opportunities, events, and environmental health publications.  Intramural research programs as well as extramural and cooperative research programs can be accessed.

NSF International (Formerly known as the National Sanitary Foundation)    
This public health and safety company site provides information on certification programs and certified products (e.g., food and water).  Provides links to other resources.

National Institute of Occupational Health and Safety
The National Institute of Occupational Health and Safety site includes funding opportunities, health hazard evaluations, safety and health topics, and training information.  Includes women's health and safety, women's health issues at work, and childhood injuries and exposures.  Provides links to other databases.

Natural Resources Defense Council 
The Natural Resources Defense Council  (NRDC) site provides information on clean air and energy, global warming, clean water, green living, toxic chemicals and health, nuclear weapons and waste, and environmental legislation.
Provides links to federal agencies.

Physicians for Social Responsibility
The Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) environment and health program site provides information about key environmental health policies and issues such as persistent organic pollutants, climate change and health, medical waste incineration and dioxin, children’s environmental health, and drinking water and health.

Environmental Protection Agency
The Pesticide Program website provides resources for pesticide safety, chemical information, pesticide registration, and legislation.

National Pesticide Information Center
National Pesticide Information Center is a collaborative effort between the environmental protection Agency and Oregon State University. The site provides general and technical information about pesticides including, regulatory and emergency information, as well as fact sheets and case profiles for health care providers.
 
University of Nebraska
This University of Nebraska site provides information on pesticides, insecticides and herbicides.  There are links to other publications focusing on agricultural/environmental subjects.

Toxics & Pollution Prevention

Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry
The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) site includes toxicology profiles of more than 250 substances. Exposure pathways, affects on health, testing and federal recommendations are included. The Top 20 Hazardous Substances for 2001 are highlighted.

Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics
The Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics site provides valuable databases and software for obtaining chemical and regulatory information, as well as information on projects, program initiatives, clearinghouses, and hot lines. 

Pollution Prevention Information Clearinghouse
The Pollution Prevention Clearinghouse (PPIC) site is a service of the EPA  dedicated to reducing or eliminating industrial pollutants. Includes information on pollution prevention, current and upcoming conferences and training opportunities. Includes links to EPA and external pollution prevention websites.

National Toxicology Program
The National Toxicology Program (NTP) is a government agency that provides current news, reports, studies and safety information on toxins and other environmental hazards.

Toxic Release Inventory
Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) site contains information about waste management activities and TRI chemical fact sheets. Includes links to TRI regulations and recent petitions.

Clean Water Action 
Clean Water Action (CWA) is a national citizens organization working for clean, safe and affordable water, prevention of health threatening pollution, and the creation of environmentally safe jobs and businesses. CWA organizes strong grassroots groups, coalitions and campaigns to protect the environment, health, economic well-being and community quality of life.

Environmental Protection Agency
This site is maintained by Purdue University in cooperation with US EPA. Download free interactive software on environmental topics such as agriculture, air and atmosphere, and environmental assessment. 

EPA Office of Water
The Office of Water site provides state-by-state information about local drinking water, and annual drinking water quality reports. Safe drinking water standards and regulations are included.

Safe Drinking Water
A nationwide alliance of environmental, consumer and public health organizations working to educate the public about drinking water improvement and protection of our water sources. The Steering Committee includes representatives from environmental, consumer, public health, and HIV/AIDS organizations. Information on vulnerable aggregates, EPA rulemaking, right to know reports and links to drinking water sites are included.

Waste Sites
Federal government program to clean up the nation's uncontrolled hazardous waste sites. Maps hazardous waste sites in local communities, Superfund clean up, and information on grants and training opportunities. Provides links to databases and software.

Environmental Databases

IRIS
The Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) is an electronic database containing information on human health effects resulting from exposure to various chemicals in the environment. Information in IRIS is intended for those without extensive training in toxicology, but with some knowledge of health sciences.

National Environmental Data Index
The National Environmental Data Index site provides direct access to environmental data and information descriptions and links to agency databases.Provides full-text search of environmental information and fielded search for a subset of the NEDI holdings.

Scorecard
Get the facts about local pollution by zip code. Environmental issues such as criteria for air pollutants, lead hazard, land contamination (Superfund), and water contamination.

Toxnet
A cluster of databases on toxicology, hazardous chemicals, and related areas.

For Toxicology Data:

  • Access to: Hazardous Substances Data Bank - Safety and handling, environmental state, and more 
  • Integrated Risk information System  - EPA data related to human health risk assessment, focused on hazard identification, and dose response assessment 
  • Chemical Carcinogenesis Research Information System - Carcinogenicity, mutagenicity, tumor promotion, and inhibition data provided by the national Cancer Institute.

Resources for Pediatric Environmental Health

EPA Office of Children's Health Protection
The US EPA Office of Children's Health Protection (OCHP) site provides parents and communities with basic information to protect children in schools, homes, and communities. National activities include awareness of asthma, childhood cancers, developmental and neurological toxicity, health effects of pesticides, and risks from contaminated water. Provides information on Regional Activities within 10 geographical areas of the U.S.A.

Children’s Health Environmental Coalition Network
Children’s Health Environmental Coalition Network (CHEC) is a charitable, non-profit organization that researches the causes of childhood cancers and their relation to hazards in the environment.  CHEC is dedicated to educating the public, specifically parents and caregivers, about environmental toxins that affect children’s health.

Children’s Environmental Health Network
The Children’s Environmental Health Network (CEHN) is a national, multi-disciplinary project whose mission is to promote a healthy environment and protect the fetus and the child from environmental health hazards. This site provides information on the issue of children’s environmental health and links to sources of more information and resources in the field. A National Childproofing Campaign is highlighted. Two list servs are available.

National Resources Defense Council 
The National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) site provides an introduction to environmental issues such as lead poisoning, diesel school bus exhaust, pet products, and decisions surrounding breast feeding.

Association of Birth Defect Children
The Association of Birth Defect Children site provides information to parents and professionals about birth defects and the environmental exposures that may cause them. Support services are available to children with birth defects and their families.

Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry Child Health
This site specializes in toxicology of children from the womb through early adolescence. Special emphasis is devoted to the effect of toxic substances on sensitive developing systems, such as the immune, nervous and reproductive systems. Continuing medical education units and continuing nursing education units are available from Environmental Medicine Case Studies.
