The American Heart Association (AHA) recognized Congressman Meehan for his work on strengthening both tobacco controls and campaign finance laws with their annual National Public Service Award.  The Award is given to those Members of Congress who have, according to the AHA, "actively promoted our mission of reducing disability and death from heart attack, stroke and other cardiovascular disease."  Only two other Members of Congress earned this recognition from the AHA that year.

In honor of Congressman Meehan's work on infertility issues, The National Fertility Association RESOLVE presented him with its Infertility Awareness Leadership Award in September of 2000.  Congressman Meehan introduced important legislation in the 106th Congress (H.R. 2774) to require federal employee health plans that offer obstetrical benefits also to provide coverage for the diagnosis and treatment of infertility.  It was with profound appreciation for his leadership and contribution to infertility awareness that he was recognized.
