DESCRIPTION

Participation in the symposium is an excellent way to prepare for careers or graduate school, build your resume, a great opportunity to develop the ability to talk about research in a supportive atmosphere, an intellectually stimulating experience, and a whole lot of fun. It is also a wonderful showcase for faculty-student collaborative research efforts across the entire UML community. All student presenters will receive a copy of the symposium proceedings and a symposium tee shirt.


SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Please avoid special characters and equations and limit the Abstract to 30 lines.
All presentations should include the following essential elements which must be filled in on the submission form:
a) Title
b) Department
c) Author to Contact
c) Other Authors if Applicable
d) Faculty Advisor
e) Abstract: Not more than 350 words

The C. Daniel Cole Undergraduate Research Award


Since 1976, the Sigma Xi Chapter of the University of Massachusetts Lowell has presented an annual award to undergraduate students in recognition of their demonstration of outstanding research capabilities and potential in science and engineering.

2008 Competition for the C. Daniel Cole Undergraduate Research Award

Undergraduate students doing basic research in the areas of the Sciences or Engineering interested in competing for the 2008 C. Daniel Cole Research Awards must do the following:

  1. Present a poster(group, maximum of three or an individual) at the 11th Annual UML Student Research Symposium on April 29th, University Excellence in Research Day. Information is available at the top of this document.
  2. By 5:00 PM on March 31st, submit an application in the form of a report (plus 9 copies) to the secretary in the Olney Hall Service Center, OH 523. You may use the material from your poster in this report which should be written in the generally accepted format of papers written for publication in scientific journals including an abstract, a list of references, your name or names, e-mail address of contact student and the name of the faculty resesearch advisor.
  3. By April 14th, up to five projects will be invited to make 15 minute(powerpoint or overhead) oral presentations to the Cole Award Committee and a general audience as part of the activities of the Research Symposium on April 29th between 1.30 PM and 3:30 PM in the Multi-Purpose Auditorium in the basement of Lydon Library(North). For group projects, ach individual must make a 5 minute presentation of his/her contribution to the project. The total time for the group presentation is 15 minutes.


After oral presentations the Committee will determine the following prize winners:
  • $500, First Prize,
  • $300, Second Prize,
  • $200, Third Prize,
  • $100. Fourth Prize.

In the case of a group project the prize will be equally divided among the group participants. In addition, all participants will be invited to attend the Sigma Xi Banquet on teh evening of April 29 as guests of the Society. The Cole Award winners will be announced and inducted into the Society of the Sigma Xi at the banquet with the first year's dues paid for by the Society.
