Division of Preventative Medicine

Associate Directors: Elizabeth Kotyla and Maureen Faul

The mission of the Division of Preventative Medicine is to develop and implement: 1. intervention strategies for the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases such as diabetes, obesity, heart disease, asthma and macular degeneration.  2. community outreach service programs in schools, nursing homes, Senior Citizen Centers, and after school and summer camp programs.

Research

Currently working on a clinical trial in collaboration with Nashua Eye Associates in Nashua, NH examining the effect of 12 eggs a week on the progression of Age-related Macular Degeneration (ADM) in clients previously diagnosed with AMD.  This is the fourth consecutive grant the Center has received from the Egg Nutrition Center/USDA to investigate the effect of nutrients found in egg yolk on AMD.  Two phases of a clinical research trial involving generally healthy older adults and the effects of the consumption of eggs in the prevention of AMD are complete.
