How to create a Browser using your own data: Lowell
- Open up the following tables within MapInfo
C:\MapInfo\class\Lowell\Boundary
C:\MapInfo\class\Lowell\Streets
C:\MapInfo\class\Lowell\Waterways
- Now we want to create a new table using the following information:
School Address Asian Black Hispanic White Bartlett 79 Wannalancit St. 175 110 91 175 Butler 1140 Gorham St. 197 10 55 288 Daley 150 Fleming St. 414 22 91 380 Robinson 110 June St. 92 11 168 303 Rogers 43 Highland St. 185 15 60 204 Sullivan 150 Draper 78 13 190 351 Wang 365 W. Meadow Rd. 128 130 199 282
- First we must create a new table, this can be accomplished by:
- Select File
- Select New Table You should now see the New Table field, within Create New Table and:
- Select (check) Open New Browser
- Select Create - This will cause MapInfo to show you the New Table Structure Box
- Next we need to create the structure of our table: we need to create the following columns for our table:
- School Name
- Address
- Asian
- Black
- Hispanic
- White
- This can be accomplished by adding a field by using the Field Information, so:
- School Name
- In the Name section type School
- In the Type section choose Character
- In the Width section type 35
- Next Select Add Field
- Address
- In the Name section type Address
- In the Type section choose Character
- In the Width section type 35
- Next Select Add Field
- Asian
- In the Name section type Asian
- In the Type section choose Integer
- Next Select Add Field
- Black
- In the Name section type Black
- In the Type section choose Integer
- Next Select Add Field
- Hispanic
- In the Name section type Hispanic
- In the Type section choose Integer
- Next Select Add Field
- White
- In the Name section type White
- In the Type section choose Integer
- Next Select Add Field. MapInfo will now show you the Create New Table field
- School Name
- Save your newly created table in your OWN GIS FOLDER which can be found under C:\mapinfo\staff\YOUR NAME
- Name your table: Middle Schools
MapInfo will now create your BROWSER and place it in front of the Lowell map.
- Now we need to start entering information in our BROWSER, so we first must create a new row, to do this either:
- Choose Edit from the word toolbar.
- Next select New Row.
- Press Ctrl & E at the same time. (This creates a New Row)
NOTE: Feel free to maximize the Browser screen.
- Next, we need to enter in our information in our table. Enter the data into your Browser from The Lowell Middle Schools Table. You are going to have to repeat Step 4 for each new row you create. NOTE: Remember to periodically Save your data, incase of a computer malfunction! Once you have entered all the data Save it. It is now time to Geocode our information (put it on the map).
- Geocoding the data
- Select Window in the Word Toolbar and then select Tile Windows.
- Next we need to make sure the Browser Window is Active. The Title bar should be blue, if it isn't click on to the Browser.
- Select Table in the Word Toolbar and then select Geocode. You should now have a Geocode Box in front of you.
NOW IT GETS TRICKY SO FOLLOW THESE DIRECTIONS PRECISELY!!! - Under Geocode Table select Middle Schools.
- Under Column select Address. Ignore Boundary Column.
- Under Search Table select Street. Ignore for Objects in Column.
- Select Interactive within the Mode Box.
- Select the Symbol Box and customize your symbol.
- Now CROSS YOUR FINGERS and click OK. Next The Almighty MapInfo will have you make some choices…CHOOSE WISELY! After all is done if your box says 7 geocoded proceed to the next step, otherwise politely SCREAM FOR HELP!
- Opening your new map.
- First we must close the Middle Schools Browser.
- Choose File in the Word toolbar and select Close Table, not Close All.
- Select Middle Schools and click the Close Button. Now you are just left with your Lowell Map, so maximize it!
- Now it time to open your new map! (Wahoo!)
- Click the Layer Control Button in the Toolbar
- You are now looking at the Layer Control Box, within Layers click the Add button.
- Using the mouse arrow highlight Middle Schools and click Add.
- Now you are left with your Layer Control Box that now displays Middle Schools so click OK.YOU DID IT! HOW DOES YOUR MAP LOOK?
It is time to move onto the Next Section... Multi-Variate Thematic Mapping.
