The Advanced Electronic Technology Center (AETC) was established in 1990 with a seed grant from the MITRE Corporation. The Center works closely with engineers from local electronic companies such as M/A-COM, MITRE, Polaroid, Raytheon and Triton Systems.  Research is conducted on GaAs and Si high-speed transistors, quantum and opto-electronics, bio-engineering and solar cells.

Samson Mil'shtein, Ph.D., a professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, is the Center's director.

Mission Statement
AETC's educational mission is to give students from middle school through college the opportunity to study engineering and scientific topics. The Center developed the concept of the educational tree. Elementary and middle school students participating in the Science and Technology Early Reach-Out Program are the roots of the tree. The Gifted High School Program is the tree's body. UMass Lowell undergraduate and graduate students are the productive top of the tree.

By promoting middle school, high school, undergraduate and graduate research, the Center is preparing students for the challenges of the technology-oriented workplace.

AETC contributes to UMASS technology transfer and applied research, while simultaneously working in such fundamental fields as solid-state physics and quantum electronics.

Projects
The Center's research mission is the development of reliable manufacturing for giga-scale miniaturization technology performed in conjunction with supporting companies. Current projects include:

  • High electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) with tailored field (TF)
  • Development of novel quantum well transistors
  • Measurements of noise in amplifiers
  • Systems for information coding and scrambling
  • Optoelectronics for forensic investigations and for perimeter security systems
  • Electronics for bio-engineering and measurements of biological currents and voltages.
