Research is being conducted in the following areas:
- Sizing the PV and the battery capacities as required for a certain load.
The modular nature of the PV array and battery bank allows the optimum configuration to be realized. The system is sized for a typial New England house using developed optimization methods. The Renewable Energy Lab simulated the house with inductive and resistive loads switched automatically throughout the day in accordance with hourly house typical demand as provided by the utility company.
- Site matching with windmills and photovoltaics
Given the parameters for a specific site, windmills, and photovoltaic modules, the optimum style of windmill and/or module can be determined for that site using long-term weather data.
- Steady state performance evaluation of a hybrid wind/photovoltaic system supplying a typical New England house
- Dynamic response of the hybrid power system to a wind gust.
- Dynamic response of the hybrid power system to a passing cloud.
- Maximization of the photovoltaic output using microprocessor controlled Maximum Power Point Trackers (MPPT) with state-of-the-art power electronics.
- Maximization of the wind generator output using microprocessor controlled Maximum Power Point Trackers (MPPT) with state-of-the-art power electronics.
- Comparison of steady state and dynamic performance of three different types of residential wind turbines, namely 1500W, 500W, 300W.
- Unbalanced operation of the three phase wind generators.
- Optimum management of the Residential Hybrid Energy Conversion System.
