Massachusetts has been a “high technology” state ever since it led the way in the mass production of cotton textiles and shoes in the early 1800's. However, the nature of the technology and the organization of industry have changed repeatedly. For some time now, there has been a shift from manufacturing to services, and a shift away from local ownership of industry. This project pulls together a set of studies of particular issues affecting Massachusetts industries and the regional economy.
