Center for Health Promotion and Research

The Center for Health Promotion and Research (CHPR) focuses on public health, which is an important component of UMass Lowell's commitment to sustainable development. The center strives to understand and explain the social determinants of health, and to collaborate with others to develop strategies for preventing illness, injury and fatalities, and promoting health. We work with other UML centers, institutes, colleges and departments, along with community-based and advocacy groups, government, employers, labor unions, environmental and environmental justice organizations, and healthcare providers.

CHPR is based in the UMass Lowell School of Health and Environment (SHE), and seeks to strengthen the support available for University faculty, staff and students to pursue innovative research and service activities. The Center has two co-directors, Dr. Barbara Mawn from the Nursing Department and Dr. Craig Slatin from the Department of Community Health and Sustainability. CHPR shares an office with the Center for Health and Disease Research.

Previously, the Center for Health Promotion and Research was named the Center for Public Health Research and Health Promotion from 2001 to early 2008. In March 2008, the decision was made to switch to a shorter name.
