The Science of Small ThingsThe NSF-funded Science of Small Things (SOST) is a youth-based ITEST Project designed to expose urban, low income middle-school youth to nanotechnology and ensure that they develop the science skills needed to participate in the nanotechnology revolution. The program is a partnership with Citizen Schools, a national nonprofit that mobilizes thousands of adult volunteers to improve achievement of low-income, educationally at risk youth by blending real-world learning projects with rigorous academic activities. Other partners include Lowell Public Schools, UMass Lowell Center for High-rate Nano-manufacturing, Raytheon and Nypro Corportations. The program tests the viability of a model that combines the development of IT skills with a focus on nanotechnology (a central integrative STEM area). UML’s NSF-funded Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center for High-Rate Nanomanufacturing (CHN) is developing techniques to commercialize nanotechnology products. These approaches will lead to job creation and Lowell’s youth will need to develop workforce skills to meet these demands. Sustainability is promoted by building upon established structures and existing partnerships, and linking to UML research. SOST brings together leaders in private industry, university research and development and education to deliver nanotechnology-related experiences. This program has presented the CFWC with opportunities to develop new partnerships with multi-national corporations and to strengthen existing relationships with local schools and non-profits. | |
