Students in poor communities often have limited opportunities to develop strong academic skills in science and math.  Project Splash is designed to address this gap through the development of after school programs.  Funded by the National Science Foundation, this program brings together opportunities to learn about aquaculture as a science, as a resource to fishing in a polluted world, and as a continuation of cultural experiences refugees and immigrants bring to the United States.  Students from the Rogers Middle School and the Lowell Housing Authority participate in this program that provides unique opportunities for participants to integrate their knowledge of science, math and culture.  Graduate students from throughout the university have served as mentors and trainers in the program.  Faculty members from many different UML departments are providing in-kind resources to help with the development and implementation of the program.  The lead teacher working with us on this project won an excellence award for this work from the Executive Office of Environmental Affairs.

Regional Educational Aquaculture Partnership (REAP)

The Regional Education Aquaculture Partnership, (REAP) works to create and strengthen educational links between Rhode Island’s diverse communities and aquaculture resources in ways that promote long-term viability of agriculture/aquaculture in Rhode Island and the New England region.  REAP, in collaboration with representatives of Rhode Island aquaculture organizations began an innovative education training and aquaculture program.  Advancing awareness, interest and development of fresh water aquaculture was successfully accomplished under Rhode Island Farm Viability grant funding through promotion, outreach and workshops.  Facilitation and coordination of state and federal aquaculture support resources occurred through the REAP process.

Rhode Island and Project Splash

The Rhode Island Urban League is working to replicate Project Splash in Providence, pending funding.  Project Splash has developed a summer initiative: Fishin’ Mission pilot study with goals:

  • To harvest local canal fish and analyze as a community participatory process which includes youth
  • To analyze water quality of canal(s) and possibly sediment analysis
  • To utilize data obtained for public information and education programs.
