GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) Lowell is designed to increase the number of low-income students prepared to succeed in post-secondary education. The program is focused on increasing math literacy and raising the level of mathematical performance among students and has well established partnerships among schools, colleges, local arts and youth-serving organizations, and coordinated activities with adult education and other programs to support parents in the schools and the community.
What Is GEAR UP?
GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is a six-year federally funded college-awareness program that works with Lowell Public School students and their parents. We provide academic assistance in the form of tutoring, mentoring, parent workshops, parent education classes, college and career awareness, and after-school enrichment programs. We also provide professional development for teachers.
Who Do We Serve?
GEAR UP originally worked with seventh- and eighth-grade middle school students at the Robinson, Stoklosa, Rogers, Butler and Sullivan Middle Schools. We have followed this group of students to Lowell High School in 2007 as they entered their freshman year. GEAR UP Lowell will continue to support this cohort during sophomore year in 2008, junior year in 2009, and senior year in 2010. Our goal is to see many of our students accepted into a two- or four-year college or university.
Who Are Our Partners?
GEAR UP works in partnership with the University of Massachusetts Lowell, Middlesex Community College, the Lowell Public Schools, and many community organizations including: the Revolving Museum, the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Lowell, the Merrimack Valley Housing Partnership, the Lowell Telecommunications Corporation, and the United Teen Equality Center. GEAR UP also works very closely with parents, businesses, and religious and non-profit groups to increase the likelihood of more children pursuing a post-secondary education.
