How to create your own Bi-Variate Map: Lowell Middle Schools
- Open up the following tables:
C:\MapInfo\class\Lowell\Boundary
C:\MapInfo\class\Lowell\Streets
C:\MapInfo\class\Lowell\Waterways
C:\MapInfo\staff\YOUR NAME\Middle Schools
- Next we want to create our Thematic Map so we go to the word toolbar and select Map.
- Next we choose Create Thematic Map.
- Select Pie Charts and click Next. You are now shown the Create Thematic Map - Step 2 of 3 Box.
- Under Table select Middle_Schools.
- Within Fields from TABLE, choose two of the following:
- Asian
- Black
- Hispanic
- White
- To add fields Highlight the Field, and ten click Add. NOTE: That field should now appear in the Fields for Pie/Bar Chart.
- When you have two fields in the Fields for Pie/Bar Chart, click Next.
- You are now shown the Create Thematic Map - Step 3 of 3 Box. Click O.K. Voila! Voila! You have just created your own Bi-Variate Thematic Map! How does it look?
- Lets modify our map.
- Go to the word toolbar and select Map.
- Next we choose Modify Thematic Map.
- Select Styles under Customize.
- Now it's time to play! Customize your map to your own specifications.
- Save your WORKSPACE in your OWN GIS FOLDER which can be found under
C:\mapinfo\staff\YOUR NAME Remember: This is a WORKSPACE, not a table, so choose File and then Save Workspace, name your workspace Middle Schools Pie.
- Joining data from different Tables to Create a Bi-Variate Map - Open up the following tables:
C:\MapInfo\class\Lowell\Boundary
C:\MapInfo\Class\Lowell\Waterways
C:\MapInfo\Class\Lowell\Other\Census 96
C:\MapInfo\Class\Lowell\Other\Food Stores
-or-
C:\MapInfo\Class\Lowell\Other\Toxic Sites
- Next we want to create our Thematic Map so…
- Go to the word toolbar and select Map.
- Next we choose Create Thematic Map.
- Select Ranges and click Next. You are now shown the Create Thematic Map - Step 2 of 3 Box.
- Under Table select Census 96
- Under Fields select Join…
- You are now shown Update Column for Thematic.
- Under Get Value from Table: select either Food Stores or Toxic Sites.
NOTE: This depends on which table you picked. - Under Calculate select Count.
- Click OK. Now you are shown the Create Thematic Map - Step 2 of 3 Box again. Under Table, Census 96 should appear.
- Under Fields, CountOf (table you picked) should appear.
Click Next. Now you are shown the Create Thematic Map - Step 3 of 3 Box. - Click OK. Voila! You have just created a Bi-Variate Thematic Map with data from 2 different tables! How does it look?
- Lets modify our map.
- Go to the Word Toolbar and select Map.
- Next we choose Modify Thematic Map.
- Select Styles under Customize. Nowit's time to play! Customize your map to your own specifications!
- Save your WORKSPACE in your OWN GIS FOLDER which can be found under
C:\mapinfo\staff\YOUR NAME Remember: This is a WORKSPACE, not a table, so choose File and then Save Workspace.
