The goal of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is to provide its students with a well balanced, high quality education in four principal areas of civil engineering: environmental, geotechnical, structural, and transportation engineering that will permit them to practice civil engineering at a professional level, that will prepare them for graduate study, that will promote life long learning and continuing professional development and that will provide them with the skills and knowledge necessary to develop into active contributors to the economic and social vitality of the region.

To this end, the Educational Objectives of the CEE Department are to produce graduates who: (1) have a strong fundamental scientific and technical understanding of the principles of mathematics, science and engineering science upon which engineering practice is based, (2) have the knowledge and ability to apply engineering and critical thinking skills to engineering analysis and design projects in four areas of Civil and Environmental Engineering; environmental, geotechnical, structural and transportation engineering, (3) have the knowledge and skills to design, conduct and evaluate experiments, and work in teams, (4) have the ability to communicate technical and professional information in written and oral forms, and (5) understand the need to engage in life-long learning, and understand their moral, ethical, legal and professional obligations to society.
