This course investigates the impact of disease on human society from ancient times to the 20th century. We explore how societies of the past have responded to both epidemic and endemic diseases, including plague, cholera, leprosy, influenza, syphilis, smallpox, polio, and HIV. We also examine the history of germ theory, the development of biological weapons, future threats to human health, and other intersections between human society and biological forces.
