Rules
The
Game, Playing Area, and Equipment
- Each team will consist
of 6 players, at least 2 males or 2 females.
- A team may begin a game
with 5 players, 1 of which must be male or female.
- The net will be 7’8”
high, approximately half way between women’s and men’s height.
Periods,
the Clock, and Substitutions

A match is the best 2 – out of three games to 25
points.
- A team that has scored
25 points and is at least 2 points ahead is the winner of the game or to a
maxim of 27 points.
- Each team is permitted
1 time out per game, and 3 per match.
Starting
the Game and Continuation of Play
- Each team will begin
the game line up on the end line until the referee whistles the teams onto
the court.
- The ball is put into
play by a serve, which is executed by the right back payer. Underhand and overhand serves are
acceptable. A serve may hit the net
and be legal. The home team is
awarded the first serve. The serve
alternates each game after that.
- The first server for
each team is the right back player. Thereafter, players rotate in a
clockwise direction, one position with the right front player advancing
become the next server.
- The ball may be played
by any part of the body. The ball
must be cleanly struck or hit.
- When a player contacts
the ball simultaneously with an opponent during a block, the play is
called a held ball and the point shall be replayed.
- The only participants
allowed to discuss or question play with
officials will be the stated Captain of each team.
Penalties
and Ejections
- Spiking the serve is
deemed illegal.
- A player may not touch
the net or the net supports while the ball is in play, unless the ball is
hit by an opponent and pushes the net into the player. A player may reach over the net to block
a ball moving toward the net and on the follow through of a hit. A player may not reach over the net and
interfere with a set of the opposing team.

UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT IS DEFINED AS A PLAYER
USING ABUSIVE LANGUAGE, PLAY WHICH IS DEEMED UNSAFE BY INTRAMURAL SUPERVISOR,
AND VERBAL ABUSE TOWARDS INTRAMURAL OFFICIALS.
A PLAYER WILL RECEIVE 1 WARNING FOR THIS BEHAVIOR AND THEN WILL BE
EJECTED FROM THE GAME. IF A PLAYER IS
EJECTED HE OR SHE MUST LEAVE THE PLAYING AREA OR THEIR TEAM WILL BE
FORFEITED. WHEN A PLAYER IS EJECTED
OPPOSING TEAM IS AWARDED 1 POINT.
Scoring
- All games will be
played with rally scoring. A point
is scored every time the ball is served.
