Mathematics Benefactor Receives Circle of Distinction Award

Arthur Zamanakos

Arthur Zamanakos understands how a helping hand can make a difference in allowing students of limited means to follow their dreams.  His own educational experience led him to establish the Arthur S. Zamanakos Endowed Scholarship, which will award two $3,000 scholarships annually to juniors and seniors enrolled in the mathematics program at the Lowell campus.

His commitment to helping promising students receive affordable, quality education is one reason why Zamanakos received the 2004 Circle of Distinction Award at a presentation ceremony in September 2004.  The award is presented annually by the Office of University Advancement to recognize leaders in philanthropy who have a vision of excellence for the University.

When Zamanakos finished his military service in World War II, he took advantage of the G.I. bill to make his college dreams a reality.  He attended the University of Massachusetts at Fort Devens for two years, where he developed his passion for mathematics.  He subsequently received his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Boston University and a master’s degree from George Washington University.

Zamanakos enjoyed a long and successful career grounded in his love of math.  With the establishment of the scholarship at UMass Lowell, he hopes to be able to give students an opportunity similar to his own in discovering a passion for math.
