Martin Captures Two Medals at Athens Games

Paul Martin

Class of '92

Paul Martin, the author and world-class triathlete who has triumphed over teenage adversity and a left-leg amputation, was the winner of two medals at the Paralympic Games in Athens in 2004.

Martin, who graduated from UMass Lowell with a degree in mechanical engineering in June 1992 then lost half his leg in a car accident six months later, captured both his medals in cycling events, a silver in the men’s team sprint and a bronze in the men’s four-kilometer individual pursuit.

Martin, who last year saw the release of his memoir, "One Man’s Leg," continues to compete in triathlons around the world and is a member of the U.S. amputee hockey team.  A resident of Boulder, Colo., he recently completed his LSAT’s and was planning to attend law school.
