Edward Manzi, president and chief executive officer of Fidelity Bank, is the latest UMass Lowell alum who will visit campus for the Robert J. Manning ’84 Speaker Series to share stories of business success.

Manzi, who graduated in 1982, will speak on Tuesday, Dec. 1 at 4 p.m. in Falmouth 313. Manzi earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting at UMass Lowell and then pursued an MBA at Bentley College. He is a certified public accountant, and has held executive management positions in several community banks, joining Leominster-based Fidelity Bank in 1997.

Fidelity Bank is one of the oldest independent, locally owned banks in Massachusetts and has $400 million in assets. The institution, which serves Central Massachusetts with branches in six communities, offers traditional banking services, as well as investments and insurance to personal and business customers.

Manzi also serves in several volunteer roles in the community, including as a member of the audit committee of the United Way of North Central Massachusetts. He has been honored by the Northern Worcester County Association of Realtors, Mount Wachusett Community College and the Nashoba Valley Chamber of Commerce.

The Manning Speaker Series was established earlier this year through a $25,000 gift from Robert C. Pozen, chairman of MFS Investment Management and a former Fidelity Investments top executive who also served in public roles including Massachusetts secretary of economic affairs in the Romney Administration, chairman of a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission advisory committee charged with developing improvements in financial reporting and as a member of President George W. Bush’s Commission to Strengthen Social Security.

The series – which Pozen named for his friend and MFS Investments colleague Manning, who is also chairman of the UMass board of trustees – brings successful alums in finance-related careers to campus to talk to accounting and finance majors, as well as other interested College of Management students.

“The Manning Speaker Series, brought to us by a generous gift from Robert Pozen, has been very successful so far. Our students have learned about our current economic situation from a variety of high-level perspectives, have benefited from shared personal histories of professional development, and have been consistently reminded of the importance of personal values and ethics,” said Kathryn Carter, dean of the College of Management. “It has also been a pleasure to watch the students participate more and more in the presentations and develop and practice networking skills. We are already in the process of identifying speakers for next year.”

Manzi’s talk is the last of the fall semester. Saro Picciotto ‘’81, chairman and chief executive officer of Wainwright Investment Counsel, is scheduled to speak next semester. Other upcoming speakers include:

  • Feb. 2 – UMass Lowell Vice Chancellor of Finance and Administration Joanne Yestramski, a 1976 graduate;
  • Feb. 16 – Digital Credit Union President and Chief Executive Officer Jim Regan ’88;
  • March 2 – Mark Forziati, a 1978 graduate who was the managing director of Tudor Investments before retiring;
  • April 27 –  Kathy Allen ’77, who served as corporate vice president and chief financial officer of Millipore Corp., before her retirement.
