The Great Wall of China is one stop on the Alumni Travel Program's China trip.
The Alumni Travel Program has expanded to include exotic destinations around the world, with more trips scheduled to offer greater flexibility for travelers. Alumni and other members of the University community can participate in these all-inclusive, escorted group trips that also involve an educational component.
This year, the program, which is run by AHI Travel, offers 10- to 14-day trips to China, the Amalfi Coast, Israel and Jordan, Peru, the Panama Canal, Egypt and South Africa. Some involve cruises, some are land excursions and some combine the two. Each destination offers multiple departure dates, some leaving as early as January 2010.
Director of Alumni Services and Programs Diane Earl says what sets these trips apart, besides the interesting destinations, is the educational component. A faculty member accompanies the group, which is made up of other alumni from the UMass system and other university alumni travel programs.
“The owners of AHI are former alumni directors, so they know what appeals to their audience,” she says. “The faculty member who accompanies the trip is very knowledgeable about the area and that adds an extra touch to the experience.”
One example of the new destinations offered is a 13-day journey down the Yangtze River in China. Highlights of the trip include: three nights in Beijing to see Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City and the Olympic Stadium; three nights traveling down the Yangtze River, including visits to Three Gorges Dam and the Lesser Gorges; and two nights in Shanghai.
