Students, Alumni and Families Invited to Join in the Fun

groups of students

Student booths are busy during Family Day, one event in the Fall Festival weekend.

Fall Festival will bring the entire UMass Lowell family together for a weekend of fun Oct. 22 through 24. Alumni, parents, students, faculty, staff and administration can choose from an array of activities and events that celebrate the students, the athletes and the spirit of UMass Lowell.

“The idea is to roll Homecoming, Family Day and Hockey First Night into one big weekend that everyone will enjoy,” says Dana Skinner, director of athletics. The weekend is being sponsored by Athletics, Student Activities and Leadership and Alumni Relations.

Activities begin at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 22 with a gathering of recent alumni at the Grand Canal in Boston. A get-together for all alumni, complete with hot dogs and beverages, will be held on Saturday, Oct. 24 from 4 to 5 p.m. on the lawn behind Tsongas Arena.

Thursday evening will include a big event for students and others as Bo Burnham performs his comedy routine at the Campus Recreation Center at 8 p.m. Burnham has been named one of the “12 rising stars of comedy” by Entertainment Weekly.

Attention on Friday, Oct. 23 will be focused on Hockey First Night, as the River Hawks play their home-opener against Colgate at 7 p.m. Students are invited to the “Break the Record Rally” before the game on the Recreation Center lawn.

Family Day will take center stage on Saturday, Oct. 24 as Costello Gymnasium is transformed into a massive carnival for the day. Activities will include everything from face-painting to pony rides to an array of food and games. Student organizations often use Family Day events to raise funds to support their activities for the year.

Saturday will be capped off with the second home hockey game, as the River Hawks play Northeastern at 5 p.m.

The rest of the weekend will be filled out with a dodge ball tournament; Jennifer’s Run, a 5K walk/run event that raises money for athletics scholarships; a reception in honor of former hockey coach Billy Riley, and a walking tour of Lowell.  Other UML athletic teams will compete throughout the weekend.

A complete schedule of Fall Festival events, including information on tickets, is available at www.uml.edu/fallfestival.
