How to Apply for Financial Aid
- Contact the Office of Financial Aid for complete information.
- File the FAFSA form as soon as possible after January 1 to make the University’s March 1 priority deadline. Be ready to submit copies of the federal income tax return for you and your parents if requested.
- Check the list of scholarships UMass Lowell makes available and ask your guidance counselor or public library to get information about local and private scholarships.
Students should not wait for an admission decision from UMass Lowell before filing the FAFSA.

Be Sure to File the FAFSA
What is it? The Free Application for Federal Student Aid form is used extensively by colleges and universities, including this one, and is analyzed according to nationally standardized criteria to determine the extent of a student’s need.
Why do it? Filing it allows you to be considered for the Federal Pell Grant Program; state scholarship and grant programs; loans; institutional assistance programs; and on-campus work. Be sure to list UML on the form.
When is it due? The University’s priority deadline for the FAFSA is March 1. The deadline to qualify for state aid is May 1.
Where do you get it? The FAFSA form is available at your high school guidance office or at the Office of Student Financial Assistance at UMass Lowell. You can also file the form electronically at the FAFSA web site.
Where should you send it? Mail it in the envelope included in the FAFSA application. The application will also include a receipt card, which you can -- but are not required to -- include in the envelope. The receipt card is returned to you when the FAFSA is received at the central processor.
