Admissions Policy

Undergraduate Admissions Policies and Instructions for Applicants

a) Each applicant for admission to the University of Massachusetts Lowell must complete the Application for Admission and submit the required Essay, Letter of Recommendation, SAT score and high school transcript.

b) You must indicate the Major of your choice in the appropriate space on the application form.

c) If you wish to apply for financial aid, please contact the Office of Student Financial Assistance at 978-934-4220 or on the web at www.uml.edu/admin/finaid. Applicants requesting financial assistance must file the  Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) with the Pell Grant Program in order to be considered for federal programs such as the Perkins Loan Program, Supplementary Educational Opportunity Grant Program, College Work Study Program, and the Stafford Loan. Applications may be picked up from your high school guidance counselor; post offices, public libraries, or the Office of Student Financial Assistance at UMass Lowell. The financial aid code for UMass Lowell is 002161.

d) Application for admission should be made as soon as possible after the first marking period in the senior year of high school. Applicants should ask their guidance counselors to forward to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions a transcript of their secondary grades, including the first marking period of the senior year. The transcript should be enclosed with the application form. If the applicant has not completed high school, a copy of the G.E.D. and school transcripts of all high school course work attempted should be forwarded.

e) The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) of the College Entrance Examination Board (CEEB) or the American College Test (ACT) is required. International students who have not completed two semesters of English composition with a “C” or better at an American university must also take the TOEFL examination. In addition, international students are advised to start the application process no less than 12 months in advance of the expected date of enrollment. The CEEB code number for UMass Lowell is 3911.

f) Music Majors Only: Upon approval of credentials by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, music applicants will be contacted to schedule a day and time for the required audition and testing. There are several audition dates held throughout the academic year. Please indicate your musical instrument in the space provided on the application.

g) Art Majors Only: Those applying as Fine Arts and graphic Design majors may be required to submit a portfolio; final acceptance into the program will be made by the College.

h) Correspondence from students who may have questions, or need help in adapting their high school programs to fit requirements of the University, is welcomed. Applicant inquiries will be answered by calling 978-934-3931 or contacting us via the web at wwwuml.edu/Admissions. All communications concerning an applicant’s status will be directed in writing to the applicant personally; information will not be given over the telephone.
