I don’t fit the profile of a traditional college student, though at UML I seem to blend right in. I’m a 30-year-old married former Marine reservist who returned to college after working in a hospital laboratory for several years.
I think being in the work world motivated me to become a better student. I’m fairly certain that I’ll enter the biomedical field after I graduate. As part of a research project in the Composites Laboratory, I am trying to develop a way to make an artificial blood vessel. I’m also assisting a graduate student in the Nanotechnology Laboratory. UML gives you great opportunities like these plus internships and coop experiences that really prepare you for the future.
The curriculum is definitely challenging, so prepare to work hard if you are majoring in any of the engineering disciplines. But take part in the extracurricular activities, too. I participate in the student division of the American Society of Mechanical Engineering, as well as the mechanical engineering honors society, Tau Beta Pi.
