Applicants must be proficient in English to succeed at UMass Lowell. Prospective students whose native language is not English or whose language of instruction has not been English are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). They must submit their score on the TOEFL as part of their application package.
For freshmen applicants, the University requires a minimum score of 550 on the paper version of the test and a minimum score of 213 on the computer-based version.
For transfer applicants, the University requires a score of 500 or above on the paper version and a score of 173 or above is required on the computer-based TOEFL.
