Veterans' Tuition Waiver

Veterans who are permanent legal residents of Massachusetts for at least one year, and can provide the required paperwork may qualify for the Veteran's Tuition Waiver at UMass Lowell.

Required Paperwork

• DD214 - for Discharged Massachusetts Residents  
  
  
  • Honorable discharge
  • 90 days Active Duty
  • Letter from Commanding Officer - for Active Duty Military
    
    
• Proof of Residency - required for all CSCE students
  
  
  • Massachusetts Resident Income Tax Return (Form1)
    
    
  • Most recent official document showing address and bar code info.  (must be completed)
  • All students who Tele-file or Electronically file must include a copy of  W-2
  • Cannot accept  generic hand-written tax form

OR

• Certificate of Residency

1. Obtain from Town/City Hall
2. Document must include:
   
1. Official Letterhead or Official Town form
2. Current Address
3. Number of months/years residing at address

• Must be notarized or have official town seal (original copy of certificate is required – cannot accept copy)

  • All veterans receiving the tuition waiver must matriculate into a program (certificate or degree program). The application for admissions may be obtained online on one of the following websites:

  Continuing Studies Admissions

Important Notes:  

1. Veteran must notify Veterans’ Benefits Coordinator every semester once registered for classes – waivers are not automatically applied to students’ account. 
2. On-Line, Non Credit, Off Campus, Directed Study courses are not covered under the Waiver
3. Waiver is for tuition only, fees are not covered ( it is the responsibility of the student to pay all fees)
4. Waivers are not retroactive
5. UMass Lowell academic year ends June 30. All CSCE students must update their proof of residency July 1
6. Residency must be established through Admissions for all Undergrad/Day and Graduate students
7. Active Duty/Non-Resident Undergrad/Graduate students who are stationed in MA can qualify for Active Duty Military Waiver - they must submit a copy of their Military ID and one of the following:
   
   1. residency certificate
   2. copy of lease for housing while stationed in MA
   3. letter from Commanding Officer
   4. copy of orders
