Mahoney Hall, Room B9
People with disabilities (mental retardation, chronic mental illness, chronic physical disabilities resulting from both congenital and acquired injuries and diseases, autistic disorders, etc.) are among the most under-represented and under-served populations in the United States today. This minor will offer students a unique opportunity to develop a richer understanding of what it means to live with a disability in the context of contemporary American society. The minor is anchored by a foundation of courses in Psychology, English and Sociology, and it also has a number of electives that allow students to see the links between disabilities and other diverse and marginalized groups (e.g., women, minorities) and to incorporate multiple perspectives (historical, political, economic, ethical). To complete the minor all students will be required to take 4 core courses in Disability Studies, and to complete 2 to 4 three-credit electives from an approved list. Approved electives must be clearly relevant to issues connected with disability or must contain some content explicitly related to disability.
Requirements
The Disability Studies minor is open to all undergraduates and consists of an interdisciplinary program of 18-24 credits of required and elective courses.
Required Courses
59/47.363 Introduction to Disability Studies
42.258 Disability in Literature
47.362 Psychology of Developmental Disabilities
48.225 Sociology of Disability
In addition students may take any two to four of the following (6-12 credits), provided that no more than one is in Psychology, and no more than two are from any other single department. Courses taken may also be counted as part of the student's major (providing that they do not exceed the 45 credit maximum) and, where applicable, as General Education courses. (500-level courses open to Seniors with GPA of 3.5 only by permission of instructor): Students who seek further information are urged to consult with the Coordinator.
