Chairman of the Democratic Leadership Council and former Tennessee Congressman Harold Ford Jr. addressed a record number of graduates at the University of Massachusetts Lowell’s commencement on Saturday, May 30 at the Tsongas Arena.
Nearly 2,200 graduates received associate's, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. The University honored four outstanding individuals with honorary doctoral degrees. Honorary degree recipients included Bernard Amadei, George L. Duncan, Chaz Maviyane-Davies and Robert C. Pozen. The University also honored Kathleen B. Allen '77 with the Distinguished Alumni Award.
During the ceremony, the names of all graduates were called as they processed across the stage. College receptions with light refreshments followed. Official diplomas will be available for graduates at the end of June.
This year with the help of technology, more friends and family than ever were able to participate in the ceremony. For the first time, Commencement was tweeted live @umasslowell (www.twitter.com/umasslowell). The ceremony was also streamed live online, as it has been for the past several years. A scholarship fundraising dinner was hosted by Chancellor Meehan the night before commencement, during which the honorary degree recipients, distinguished alumni and student award recipients were acknowledged. Proceeds from sponsorships and tickets sales will be directed to the UMass Lowell Scholars Fund, which supports tuition and other financial needs of UMass Lowell students. Photos from pre-commencement dinner are posted in the University's photo gallery as well.
