The Provost


The Office of Academic Affairs at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell is overseen by the Provost (sometimes known as the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs).  The Provost is the chief academic officer of the University. In the role of chief academic officer a wide range of tasks fall under the Provost’s responsibility such as: long-term planning and coordination of all academic functions of the University, oversight of all academic programs including curriculum, instruction, research, outreach and assessment, as well as oversight of the University’s libraries, the campus police, and all academic services.

On a daily basis the Provost’s Office deals with a wide range of University issues, events and programs, including: Commencement, rank and tenure, sabbatical leaves, professional development, and interacts with all levels of the university community from faculty and staff to students and parents.  The Provost also works closely with all Deans and Departmental Chairs. In addition to this work, the Provost acts as liaison to the University of Massachusetts President’s Office on academic affairs.

Faculty, staff, and students may contact the Office of the Provost to discuss or get information regarding issues such as faculty appointments, research policy, matters of academic and scientific conduct, and academic program initiatives. 

Provost Ahmed Abdelal also serves as Accreditation Liaison Officer. UMass Lowell is an accredited member of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and many of UML's programs are also accredited.
