Bio Sketch

Tom Costello brings more than three decades of technical experience and expertise to his role as Interim Chief Information and Facilities Officer. In addition to serving as a Computer Science Department faculty member since 1995 and department chair since 1999, Costello was  vice president/vice chancellor of Research and Technology from 1983 to 1995. Under his leadership, computer science enrollment increased dramatically, 12 new research and teaching faculty were hired for the department, the first campus-wide network and digital phone system were established, $18 million in industry donations were recorded, an ambitious master plan was undertaken, and the first six multi-disciplinary research centers were created.

He served in the Chancellor's Cabinet, the Chancellor's Commission to Study Academic Reorganization and chaired both the Chancellor's Committee on Athletics and the University Conflict of Interest Committee, among many others. Additionally, Costello served on several UMass System committees including the Committee on Research and Graduate Studies, the Systems Technology Task Force and chaired the Committee to assess administration of contracts and grants for the system.

In 1986, Costello was appointed by the Governor to the Massachusetts Center for Applied Technology. He also served on the Board of Governors for Saints Memorial Hospital in Lowell.

Costello taught Mathematics here and at the U.S. Naval Academy in the 1970s. He earned his B.S. in Mathematics at Boston College, and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from the University of Maryland.
