UMass Lowell & the Lowell National Historical Park

Patricia Fontaine, Clinical Associate Professor, Education

"As I am faculty in the Graduate School of Education which oversees the Tsongas Industrial History Center with the Lowell National Historical Park, I have always used the wonderful resources which are available to UML faculty. The TIHC is an educational lab for preservice teachers.  I take future teachers to experience hands-on workshops centered on Lowell and the beginnings of the Industrial Revolution where, they not only gain historical content, but are also introduced to engaging teaching strategies that can be implemented in their future classrooms.  They also visit a museum on the history of the Industrial Revolution, and become witnesses to the life of mill girls by visiting a restored boarding house and a full-functioning power loom room. All of these experiences offer valuable insights and meaning to Lowell as the first planned industrial city in America. Additionally, I have introduced many local teachers to the history of the region through lectures and tours of the park."
