UMass Lowell & the Lowell National Historical Park

Marie Frank, Associate Professor, Art History and Architecture

"I use park resources in a number of ways. First, I have park employees, such as Charles Parrott, speak to my class or take us through certain buildings. I have also arranged a number of very successful internships through the Tsongas Industrial History Center’s assistant director, Becky Warren. I have arranged for specific tours through the museum in which the tour guide tailors the visit to our specific interests. I have done the same with the turbine tour at Suffolk Mill. I also take the students on walking tours of park properties. I have also worked with Charles Parrott on collaborative conference presentations. I received a Healy grant a few years ago and we set up a conference on industrial architecture; and more recently, with colleagues, I hosted a panel for the American Studies conference here in Lowell. I couldn't imagine teaching architecture here without relying on the park!"
