Faculty in our department are engaged in cutting-edge research, with special emphases in the areas of neuroscience, cancer biology, developmental cell biology, molecular evolution, invertebrate systematics, functional morphology, structural biology, environmental microbiology, virology, climate change biology, and biology education research. Much of this research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, NASA, and the Department of Defense, along with various foundations and companies. A core mission of the department is to integrate teaching, research, and community service, and to that end, we offer undergraduate and graduate students laboratory-based research opportunities, as well as industry cooperative experiences and service-learning courses.
Prospective students should explore our Programs of Study and feel free to contact us with any questions. Periodic open house events are a great way to learn more about the faculty, courses and facilities in our department. Also, be sure to check out our Department News blog to see what is happening in Biology at UMass Lowell.
