SHE Signature Initiatives

"I'm convinced we have a better chance of finding the best solutions to tough health and environmental problems if we work together across disciplines."

David H. Wegman
Dean of UMass Lowell's School of Health & Environment

The purpose of the newly funded School of Health and Environment “Signature Initiative” projects is to encourage new ways of thinking about the relationship between health and the environment—a critical element of the School’s mission.

Unique hallmarks of a “Signature Initiative” project
  • Teaches students new ways of thinking and acting to promote health
  • Brings diverse faculty, students and staff together in solving important health issues
  • Strives to be a model project that others will want to fund and/or replicate
  • Develops partnerships with diverse groups or populations to promote change
  • Encourages innovative approaches to prevent and manage chronic diseases.

The first two funded projects combine research, service and teaching to create a healthier campus and immigrant community.
