Nursing Students Trip to Ghana Video (2010)

While many students enjoy winter break relaxing with friends and family, members of UMass Lowell's Nursing Students Without Borders program are working long hours in impoverished conditions 5,000 miles away. The senior nursing students, led by Asst. Prof. Valerie King, are delivering care, supplies, and compassion to Ghana, West Africa.

Their 17 day mission will not only make a positive impact but will provide an unforgettable learning experience for the students involved.

As they deliver much-needed supplies – everything from first aid equipment and medication to iron-enriched baby formula and hygiene products – they’ll bring the entire University along on the journey. During their January 2011 trip King, along with three of her students, are blogging about their experiences visiting clinics, orphanages and villages throughout the Volta region to conduct wellness checks and teach workshops on disease prevention.

Students bring their own equipment, including surgical gloves and needles, as well as other items, such as iron-enriched baby formula. To fund their mission, the group typically needs to raise $24,000 for supplies and to help allay the more than $3,000 each student will pay to make the trip.

If you'd like to help, please make a donation, or view our supplies "wish list".
